Bathroom Remodel

We bought our home back in 2008, and the hall bathroom is long overdue for a major renovation.  Our home was built in 1975, and the bathroom screams 1970's with yellow wall tile and a yellow laminate countertop.  There is a white double vanity that was built into the room with a large mirror that extends the length of the entire vanity.  Some of the mirror finish has worn off or something, and it looks totally horrible!  What may be worst of all is the lighting above the mirror that I have playfully and rightfully named the "octopus light".  The electrical is centered over the mirror, however the chains swag to the right and left, attached on hooks, to provide lighting beside each sink.  What a mess!  To top it all off, I decided to tackle the bathroom myself a few years ago and take that yucky yellow tile off the walls, but I didn't finish the job.  Yikes!  So now there is a hole in the wall that desperately needs fixing.
You may be wondering what am I going to do to fix this bathroom?  I've designed up a plan and we've contacted a contractor.  Yay!!

Here are the finishes:

Anatolia Tile Venatino Polished Natural Stone Mosaic Basketweave Wall Tile (Common: 12-in x 12-in; Actual: 12-in x 12-in)This is the accent tile for the shower...

allen + roth Venatino Polished Natural Stone Mosaic Subway Wall Tile (Common: 12-in x 12-in; Actual: 10-in x 12-in)...along with the shower tile.

There will be two of these vanities, instead of a double sink...
 allen + roth Britwell Cream Traditional Bathroom Vanity (Common: 30-in x 21-in; Actual: 30-in x 21-in)
allen + roth Black Absolute Granite Undermount Single Sink Bathroom Vanity Top (Common: 31-in x 22-in; Actual: 31-in x 22-in)...with this black granite countertop.  We got both for $20 each.

Hello there!  My name is Sherri Tatum, and I am a student at Randolph Community College in the interior design program.  I was born and raised in Martinsville, Virginia, but moved to Asheboro, North Carolina in 2008.  The moved changed the course of my career, presenting me with the opportunity to study interior design at the local community college.  Interior design is a field that I have always been interested in since I was a young child.  I've always been artsy and creative.  I participated in art projects when I was in elementary school and was even selected as one of the students to have my art displayed in the local mall.  I've had a consistent passion with homes, even once considering studying to be an architect.  A few years ago, I discovered my true calling for interior design while remodeling our current home.  I truly believe you can be successful at what you do well.  This is a career that I believe I will be successful in because I really enjoy what I'm doing and it makes me happy!  I hope to make others happy as well along this creative journey!

I am proud to say I have almost completed all of my classes at RCC, and next year I will be graduating college with my associates in interior design.  This has been a long and difficult journey for me.  After graduating high school, I immediately went to college for general studies, as I did not know at the time what career I wanted to pursue.  After gaining employment with a local bank, I decided to pursue a career in accounting.  Studying accounting allowed me to take all online classes, therefore I could continue to work full-time at the bank and be at home in the evenings with my family.  The convenience was great, but I was not happy.  I finally had to make the decision to quit my job at the bank so I could attend daytime classes full-time at the college for interior design.  I knew the journey would be hard with just one adult working in our household (my husband), but I also knew this was a step I needed to take.  I have not regretted a moment of my decision since!  It's important to be happy in life, and I'm extremely happy with my choice and career path!

Since studying interior design, I've discovered my "design style".  I enjoy a classical elegance style with a timeless look.  I love soft colors and neutral palettes, although I do love well designed rooms with that "pop" of color!  My favorite designer is Canada's very own Sarah Richardson!  Sarah has several television design shows on HGTV that are really fantastic to watch.  She likes to incorporate pieces from antique or thrift shops with newer classic pieces.  Sarah loves to use fabrics to develop design and color schemes for her rooms.

This room shows how Sarah Richardson used fabric on an armchair to create a beautiful and unique look.  Three different fabrics are used: a stripe, a floral, and a polka dot print.  This is Sarah's trademark of using coordinating prints.

Sarah has taught me a lot about design, and I've even discovered my own love for fabrics!!!  After graduation, I would love to pursue a career where I could work with fabric daily.  I would love the opportunity to work for a company that keeps me busy and creative.  On a side note, one place I visit every year and have loved since I was a child is Disney World!  Doing design work for Disney one day would combine two of my loves (Design and Disney) into one; and who wouldn't enjoy that!!!
